Sula’s Room supports New York based women writers of color through residencies and other programs.  In collaboration with Hedgebrook, a renown retreat for women writers, Sula’s Room aims to nurture emerging and established women writers working in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction with quiet space and community.

Our philosophy mixes Hedgebrook’s notion of “radical hospitality” (radical nurturing of women artists in order to bring forth visionary work) with the idea of gift economies best described in Lewis Hyde’s The Gift.  "The gift must move," he writes, meaning that our art (that wondrous mix of labor and divine inspiration) must be shared. The gifts we are given must be reciprocated, not back to the giver, but to the community at large.

As such, this residency has two components:

1. A weekend residency to work and write at a Hudson New York hotel B & B
2. An event where residency participants will share creative work and practical lessons with fellow women writers

Residency Details

There is no cost associated with the residency aside from the application fee.  Writers who are awarded the residency will be provided with the following:

  • A nice, comfortable private hotel room with a living area and bathroom
  • $150 stipend to defray expenses

Hudson, New York is located about 2-2.5 hours from NYC, accessible by Amtrak.  The hotel is centrally located in Hudson and walking distance from the Amtrak station and local coffee shops and eateries.

Due to a funding reorganization, Sula's Room won't be offering residencies for 2017. Hopefully, we will be able to resume in 2018.
